Mondomedia - open libraries

The aim of the project "Mondomedia – Open Libraries", which is administered by the Baobab Children's Book Fund, is to encourage public libraries to stock foreign language books and other media for the migrant population and to involve themselves actively with their foreign-language-speaking users. In collaboration with "Bibliomedia Schweiz" (www.bibliomedia.ch) and the "Verein Bücher ohne Grenzen" (www.interbiblio.ch), we have developed a further education course for librarians that offers concrete proposals and suggestions for ways in which libraries can reach the migrant population through foreign-language holdings. The project has its own website www.mondomedia.ch. The Mondomedia team is comprised of migrants working in the area of intercultural libraries together with Swiss public librarians. The courses are facilitated by a team of two Mondomedia members.
The goals of “Mondomedia” are a wider range and choice of materials in public libraries and cultural collaborations between migrants and the Swiss population. Diverse life experiences and competencies in various walks of life can be drawn upon for the recognition and application of both their similarities and complementary differences.
