Maimun
A picture book from Egypt
→ Infos
Tuha lives in Cairo. A tame monkey has been part of her family for as long as she can remember. She named it Maimun, which means ‘fortunate monkey’. In ancient Egypt, the monkey was revered as a sacred animal, and to this day it is not uncommon for a monkey to be part of the household.
Tuha and Maimun are an inseparable pair. Tuha's father earns his living as a street artist, and often Tuha and Maimun join his tours through the streets of Cairo. Tuha dances to the beat of her father's tambourine and Maimun rocks along the rythm.
Many people stop to watch and applause but still, the money in her father's pocket at the end of the day is barely enough to feed the family. Tuha sees him worried … Surely he will not give Maimun away?
One day the father comes home with a donkey. After he tried to train the donkey a few tricks but without success, he harnesses it to a cart and sets off to get oranges to sell at the market. He sees no other way.
But the bright oranges on the cart give Tuha an idea … Thanks to Tuha's perseverance and Maimun's skill they are soon back on the streets of Cairo. No, no one has ever seen a performance like this before!
